Insurance Info
Did you know???
Most health insurance plans in Maryland cover lactation visits at minimal cost to you!
If you are interested in using your health insurance for lactation support in Baltimore, submit your info here.
We are in-network providers with:
Carefirst/BCBS/Anthem/Federal BCBS
There are thousands of plans in the Carefirst/BCBS network and some plans have limitations on lactation care. Many of the local Baltimore/Maryland plans have no restrictions and provide unlimited visits, both in-person and virtually! We will confirm your plan is active, but we won’t be able to confirm specific limitations. We provide the billing codes in our welcome email and we encourage all patients to check benefits.
Aetna/Mertain
Aetna limits the number of one specific billing code for lactation visits. Some plans will only cover 3 uses of this code (because we may need to use one code for mom, and one code for baby during a visit). You can call and ask how many uses of the code S9443 with diagnosis code Z39.1 you have. If you did any online lactation courses prenatally, it may have used up some of your codes. However, we are able to bill other codes. We will provide an estimate of any balance due prior to your appointment.
United Healthcare
Most plans allow unlimited home visits at no out of pocket cost to you. Virtual care may not be covered.
Johns Hopkins Employer Health Plan (EHP)
Hopkins EHP covers home visits at no cost to you! Virtual visits may not be covered. There may be a limit on how many visits you are allowed.
We typically bill both the lactating parent and the baby’s plans, when baby is present during the appointment. We require insurance information for both patients. Utilizing insurance does not guarantee coverage.
What about…
Tricare
We are registered out-of-network providers with Tricare. You will have to pay out of pocket and we will give you a superbill for possible reimbursement.
Medicaid
Unfortunately, Medicaid does not allow Lactation Providers to be in-network. We are working to change that at the state level! In the meantime, we offer a sliding scale for out-of-pocket care ($25-$75 a visit). Please go ahead and fill out of our form to get started and we will be in touch.
How to Confirm Insurance Coverage:
At Wild Fig Lactation, we bill both lactating parent and baby if they are both present during the visit. If you are wondering what lactation coverage your plan offers, you can call and ask if the following codes are covered with the diagnosis code Z39.1.
Home visit: 99344, 99349, 99350, 99404, S9443. Telehealth: 99404, S9443
You do not need a referral or pre-certification to get lactation services through any of the above insurance companies.
